I thought I was doing a good thing by getting the pattern for The Almost Newsboy Hat straight into pdf form. Then it occurred to me -- what if someone is visiting from another country and needs translation? I see a lot of returning visitors from Russia (*waves to visitors from Russia* ☻), so I'm going to be sure to post every pattern in two forms from now on -- here on the blog, and in pdf here and/or on Ravelry. ☺
So without further ado, here's the pattern for The Almost Newsboy Hat. Again.
So without further ado, here's the pattern for The Almost Newsboy Hat. Again.
Materials Required:
- Main Color: 1 skein (approx. 115 g or 60 yds) of super bulky yarn
- Brim Color (optional): ¼ skein (approx. 35 g or 20 yds) of super bulky yarn
- US M hook / 9 mm
- US K hook / 6.5 mm
- Yarn needle
- Stitch marker
The finished hat will have circumference of approximately 21 inches, and will fit a head circumference of
21 – 23” (for an adult or older teen)
Stitch Abbreviations:
hdc: half double crochet
sc: single crochet
sl st: slip stitch
ch: chain
ch sp: chain space
st or sts: stitch / stitches
Gauge:
-After completing Round 3 of the pattern, measure the diameter of your circle by placing a measuring tape from one edge to the other. It should at this point measure 5 inches across.
- If it’s less than 5 inches, rip it out, and go up one hook size for the hat. (You’d use an N/P, or 10 mm, hook.) I recommend keeping the K hook for the brim.
-If it’s more than 5.5 inches, rip it out, and go down a hook size for the hat (use an L/8 mm hook). I also recommend dropping down to a J hook for the brim.
Notes:
-Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of every round. If you don’t have stitch markers, use a safety pin or a scrap of yarn.
-Magic ring: if you are not familiar with this technique, Google “crochet magic ring”. Many tutorials are available online, and it’s a useful tool to have in your crochet arsenal!
** Anything between asterisks means to repeat it as many times as instructed in the pattern
The Hat Pattern:
Check gauge after completing round 3 (it should be 5 inches, see notes on gauge above). Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of every round!
Make a magic circle. Ch 1.
Round 1: sc 1, hdc 7 within circle. Tighten ring. (8 sts)
Round 2: (Note: do not sl st) hdc 2 in sc, and hdc 2 in every st remaining in round (16 hdc)
Round 3: hdc 2 in 1st hdc of prev round. *1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st* around to last remaining st. 1 hdc in last st (5" in diameter, 24hdc)
Round 4: 1 hdc in 1st hdc of prev round, 1 hdc in next, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in each of next 2 stitches* until last remaining st, 2 hdc in last st (32 hdc)
Round 5: 1 hdc in 1st hdc of prev round, 1 hdc in each st around (32 hdc)
**NOTE: at Round 5, if you want your hat to be 21", do 21 divided by pi (3.1415), which is 6.68. This is the number of inches it should be in diameter (give or take a quarter inch) at this point. :) Whatever you wish the hat to be in circumference, whether its in inches or centimeters, divide it by pi, and that will give you the number of inches or centimeters the hat needs to be in diameter at the end of the final round of increases (which is round 5 in this pattern). ☻
Rounds 6, 7, 8, 9, 10: repeat Round 5
Round 11: 1 hdc in 1st st of prev round, hdc around until only 1 st remaining, sc in last st, sl st to 1st hdc of round, fasten off.
The Pattern - Brim
Switch to smaller hook. With right side facing, join new yarn color if so desired.
Round 1: ch 1, sc 2 into same stitch as ch 1. *1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st* 5 times. Sl st into next 2 ch sp. Ch 1, turn (17 sc)
Round 2: hdc into 2nd sl st from hook. *sc in next 2 sts , 2 sc in next st* 5 times. sc in next st of last 2 sts. (22 sts) sl st in last sc, sl st in ch sp to the left of last sc. Ch 1, turn.
Round 3 : sc 1 in sl st to left of hook. 1 sc in each of next 22 sts. sl st in next 2 sts. Ch 1, do not turn!
Final Round: Switch to larger hook. Evenly sc around entire hat. Sl st to first sc of round. Fasten off.
Weave in all ends with yarn needle.
Voila! You have a newsboy hat! Almost... ☺ ☻ ☺ ☻
